Mabel has serious pedigree. The 19-year-old daughter of pop maverick Neneh Cherry and Massive Attack producer Cameron McVey grew up listening to (great) music and starting writing songs of her own at the ripe old age of five. However, she didn’t let friends know she was interested in entering the family business until three years ago. It seems the Stockholm-raised/London-based diva has made up for lost time since then.

The newcomer dropped her debut single “Know Me Better” today (July 14) and it’s an impressive introduction. Drawing on turn-of-the-millennium soul and alt-R&B for inspiration, the breezy anthem also draws heavily from the jazz music her parents blasted at home. There’s a refreshing looseness to the production that sets it apart and Mabel’s vulnerable lyrics establish her as a songwriter of serious potential.
