Hilary Duff's 'Breathe In. Breathe Out.' Review
For too long we have awaited the triumphant return of our “So Yesterday” siren.

Hilary Duff’s comeback LP Breathe In. Breathe Out. is a pure-pop delight, but it’s yet to produce a hit. Pre-release singles “Chasing The Sun” and “All About You” failed to chart (and were eventually relegated to bonus track status), while the “Sparks” stalled at a bleak number 93 on the Billboard Hot 100. With stats like that it’s a miracle the album was ever released — let alone debuted at an impressive number five.

It’s always a challenge to relaunch after an extended break, but the biggest problem with Hil’s comeback lies in the dubious single choices. Even the most ardent Duff supporter rolled their eyes at the above-mentioned folk-pop ditties, while “Sparks” sounds like a Kylie Minogue B-side from 2001. Happily, it looks like the 27-year-old has wised up to the situation and is releasing one of the album’s best cuts as her next single.

“My Kind” is a sugary sweet synth-pop anthem with the kind of chorus that lodges in your brain and refuses to leave. It’s not gimmicky or particularly edgy — just a potent reminder that Hilary can knock it out of the park when she’s given appropriate material. The pop icon dropped a cute promotional video today (July 15), which finds her sweating up a storm in the dance studio. All we need is a video that doesn’t advertise a sex app and a few live appearances. Watch up top.
