Vance Joy Interview
We speak to Vance Joy about smash hit "Riptide," breaking America and his debut album.

Vance Joy moves away from the acoustic rock of debut LP Dream Your Life Away on excellent Paper Towns soundtrack cut “Great Summer.” The Aussie singer/songwriter incorporates synths into his earthy sound palette — landing somewhere between Beck and Simple Minds. As much as I loved the earnestness and simplicity of hit singles “Riptide” and “Georgia,” it’s great to hear the 27-year-old in a slightly more upbeat mode. (The lyrics, as usual, are full of longing).

“Left your clothes next to the bed, some pretty pictures in my head,” Taylor Swift’s 1989 Tour opener sings on the breezy chorus. “I hope you had a great summer, a great summer away.” Vance then (repeatedly) asks “Why’d I let you go?” to underline his general devastation. I think it’s a great sound for the Aussie songsmith — one that’s definitely worth exploring more on his sophomore LP. Watch the video, which is largely comprised of clips from the film, up top.
