Three Rare Photos From Nirvana’s First Ever Gig Posted On Twitter By Teenager
Less than a month before Brett Morgen‘s Kurt Cobain documentary Montage Of Heck returns to theaters (on August 7) following a limited theatrical run this past April and a premiere on HBO in early May, 19-year-old Twitter user Maggie Poukkula has gained major attention over the past week for uncovering quite a rock and roll rarity: three photos of Nirvana performing at their first ever concert, staged in the basement of the teen’s father in Raymond, Washington, back in 1987.
According to Rolling Stone, Tony Poukkula was a member of Seattle band Laytem. He grew up with Kurt Cobain and hosted Nirvana’s very first gig.
On July 15, Tony’s daughter Maggie tweeted out the below photo strip — which she found tucked inside a biography of Cobain owned by her father — and noted, “Pictures of my dad and Kurt Cobain playing together back in the day.”

“I had no idea that those were during Nirvana’s first concert,” Maggie told Rolling Stone. “My dad showed me them a while back, but he never mentioned that’s what was going on in the photos. I found out because of all the articles. I didn’t realize it was such a historical thing. I thought they were just cool pictures of my dad and Kurt jamming together.”
According to RS, Tony Poukkula reportedly joined Nirvana on guitar for two Led Zeppelin covers that night. At that point in 1987, the pre-Dave Grohl band consisted of Cobain, bassist Krist Novoselic and drummer Aaron Burckhard.
In other news, there’s still no word on that supposed forthcoming album of Kurt Cobain solo material that Brett Morgen compiled. In an interview with Bedford And Bowery from the spring, the director seemed to indicate the album would be released sometime this summer.
