Aretha Franklin's 'Letterman' Trainwreck
Aretha Franklin went viral for all the wrong reasons with this messy live performance.

Aretha Franklin returned last year after a lengthy hiatus with Clive Davis-curated covers LP Aretha Franklin Sings The Great Diva Classics. It was an interesting concept and boasts a handful of excellent interpretations, but the project is probably best remembered for that trainwreck performance of Adele’s “Rolling In The Deep” on the Late Show With David Letterman. You know, the one with that eye-popping ensemble and Cissy Houston serving legendary side-eye in the background.

The 73-year-old redeemed herself with a more polished appearance on The Talk today (July 30). The Queen of Soul belted out her version of “I Will Survive,” which cleverly interpolates Destiny’s Child’s “Survivor,” and 1967 classic “Chain Of Fools.” It was a little disconcerting to watch Aretha on stage with no band or backing vocalists, however she sounded terrific and soon got the crowd on their feet. I’m not sure why she’s suddenly promoting the album nine months after its release, but I’m not complaining.
