Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are back with new song “Downtown,” just a few days before they’re set to perform (this song, most likely) at the MTV Video Music Awards this weekend.

The new single is a much more fitting introduction to their next phase than “Growing Up (Sloane’s Song),” the lullaby rap dedicated to Macklemore’s daughter. Actually, it’s more like a continuation of the duo’s last phase. The semi-ironic ode to crusing around the city in a moped is a spiritual successor to “Thrift Shop” in every way, straight from Macklemore’s opening rhymes about buying the two-wheeler right on down to the horns, shameless pop breakdowns and celebration of the cheapskate life.

The song utilizes a throwback ’80s hip-hop beat and Kool Moe Dee, Melle Mel and Grandmaster Caz get feature credits, but that’s not gonna be enough to keep the legion of Macklemore slanderers at bay. His fans are gonna eat this up, though.
