Leona Lewis’ fifth LP I Am arrives in a couple of weeks (10 days, to be exact), which is a little worrying given the underperforming lead single and distinct lack of buzz. The 30-year-old could remedy the latter situation at least with her gorgeous cover of Kanye West’s 2014 single “Only One.” Why that particular song? “I was quite moved by @kanyewest speech at the VMA’s,” she tweeted this morning (September 1). “In light of this, I would like to share this with you.”

Ye’s moving ode to his late mother turns out to be the perfect song for “Bleeding Love” diva. She shows off the full range of her powerful pipes — hitting a high note at the 2:50 minute mark that will bring a tear to your eye. It’s a potent reminder of what Leona can do with the right material. On the other hand, it also exposes I Am singles “Thunder” and “Fire Under My Feet” for what they are — pleasant, but ultimately forgettable, background noise.
