Grace Jones Calls Out Beyonce, Rihanna, Madonna & More In New Memoir
As seen many times throughout the generations of pop music, the older divas have no issue speaking on their modern-day successors (see: Madonna on Lady Gaga, Mariah Carey vs. Nicki Minaj, etc). But now, Grace Jones is calling out almost all of your current favorite popstars without shame!
In an excerpt from the entertainer’s upcoming memoir published by Time Out London — titled I’ll Never Write My Memoirs, naturally — the 67 year old spills some tea on what is occurring in the music industry. Grace writes:
“Trends come along and people say, ‘Follow that trend. There’s a lot of that around at the moment: ‘Be like Sasha Fierce. Be like Miley Cyrus. Be like Rihanna. Be like Lady Gaga. Be like Rita Ora and Sia. Be like Madonna.’ I cannot be like them — except to the extent that they are already being like me.”
She continues to say,
“The problem with … the Nicki Minajes and Mileys is that they reach their goal very quickly. There is no long-term vision. They dress up as though they are challenging the status quo, but by now, wearing those clothes, pulling those faces, revealing those tattoos and breasts, singing to those fractured, spastic, melting beats — that is the status quo. You are not off the beaten track, pushing through the thorny undergrowth, finding treasure no one has come across before. You are in the middle of the road.”
Grace also curiously brings up a certain diva (she uses the pseudonym “Doris”) who wanted to collaborate on music with her. The artist’s team thought it would be good to introduce her to anew audience, but Grace was not up for it. Now she looks at “Doris” as “a baby in a closet full of other people’s clothes, a little girl playing dress-up, putting on shoes that don’t fit … She looks lost, like she is desperately trying to find the person she was when she started.”
So who could “Doris” be? Take your guesses when I’ll Never Write My Memoirs releases on Sept. 29 via Simon and Schuster.
