OMI Interview
Get to know OMI, one of the newest artists on the rise, via our Popping Up feature.

Summer 2015 saw OMI rule the land with his mega-hit “Cheerleader,” and the Jamaican artiste had his ultimate rite of pop passage recently when music’s reigning queen Taylor Swift invited him on stage to perform with her during a San Diego tour stop. But now comes the moment of truth: Can this international newcomer turn his flash in the pan into a sustainable string of hits beyond “Cheerleader”?

The curse of One Hit Wonderdom sadly befell many an artist who ruled in years past with huge summer anthems — think Gotye, Carly Rae Jepsen, PSY and Robin Thicke, for instance. For now, OMI is taking a stab at a follow-up smash by moving on from “Cheerleader” with “Hula Hoop,” ahead of his Me 4 U album release (out October 16).

The video for this tropical-flavored slice of pop cheese was shot in Miami and features OMI dancing around while inspecting various curvy female candidates for the lead part in his music video. It’s not exactly Citizen Kane, but if “Cheerleader” was your jam and you’re tickled pink about having more of the same, then have at it, kiddos.

Does OMI’s “Hula Hoop” have what it takes to become a second hit for the singer? Let us know below, or by hitting us up on Facebook and Twitter!
