I-G-G-Bye: T.I. Distances Himself From Iggy Azalea

UPDATE: T.I. has clarified his comments, saying Iggy is still signed to Grand Hustle and he’ll be working on her second album.

T.I. played an integral role in Iggy Azalea‘s rise in the US. In the early days of her career, he was her mentor and was frequently mentioned during any discussion of the Australian rapper. They appeared together on her early tracks “Murda Bizness” and “M.D.M.”  Soon enough, she put in work with big names like Diplosupported Beyoncé on tour and eventually became one of the biggest pop stars of 2014 on the strength of “Fancy.” But the more popular she became, the more she was accused of cultural appropriation and embroiled in various race- and gender-related controversies and beefs. After a few Twitter outbursts and a hip-hop lecture from Q-Tip, T.I. was apparently tired of defending her and called her out, saying she should just focus on the music. And now, it seems he’s abandoning the Iggy cause for good.

Speaking to Hot 97 Wednesday (September 16), the Grand Hustle boss was asked if they’d spoken recently. “No,” he answered. When reminded that she ignored his advice after some missteps, Tip simply says, “Yes.”

But he wasn’t salty or shady about it. “In her defense, she had a lot thrown at her at one time,” he said, before going deeper into the reasons behind their falling out, saying the Q-Tip incident was the last straw for him:

“After the Q-Tip thing, I kinda had smoothed it over… After it was cool, everything was cool, and then they kind of came back and undid what I had just [accomplished]. I’ma be all the way real, I’m a loyal partner. If I rock with you I’m gon’ rock with you…I really do feel that they [Iggy’s team] just needed a little more time to adjust, which I feel they [Iggy’s team] can do. They have the talent, they have the charisma.”

For her part, Iggy responded to questions about T.I.’s quotes on Twitter, painting a vastly different picture and making it sound like T.I. is still involved in the business aspect of her career.
