Ryan Adams is recording a Taylor Swift-approved, Smiths-inspired 1989 cover album, which he first teased last month. The eclectic rocker has been dropping snippets of his reinterpretations of Swift’s latest batch of pop hits here and there, but today (September 17) he has announced the album details and premiered the first full song on Beats 1 with Zane Lowe. You just knew it was gonna be “Bad Blood.”

The cover is jangly and subdued, transforming the song from a self-empowering moving-on anthem into a forlorn breakup ballad. Adams’ 1989 cover album drops September 21 (so much for that global release day) on Pax-Am/Blue Note, and “Bad Blood” will be available digitally on Friday.

Hear it below, and see what Taylor had to say about all this.
