Gwen Stefani‘s long-awaited comeback seems to be in high gear once again, as she premiered her new single “Used To Love You” today (October 20) after performing it at a surprise concert in NYC.

Co-written by Stefani, Justin Tranter and Julia Michaels (and produced by J.R. Rotem), “Used To Love You” is a vulnerable mid-tempo ballad with a driving piano melody and subtle synths that finds the singer stepping away from the pumped-up vibes of previous tracks like “Spark The Fire” & “Baby Don’t Lie.” Instead, she lets listeners into her deep feelings of pain and a longing love that arrived after her divorce with husband of 13 years, Gavin Rossdale.

Heartache is immediately relatable (just ask Adele) and Gwen is often praised for her underrated slow songs (see: “Wonderful Life,” “Early Winter,” “Cool,” etc.), so it is refreshing to witness her jumpstart this current album era with a new vibe.

In an interview with Entertainment WeeklyThe Voice coach revealed the previous project was scrapped & she started anew. “It happened really fast,” she admits. “[But] I just feel so lucky to make music. It’s a gift to channel true emotions and then capture them. When I finish a song I listen to it so many times — until I can’t listen again — because you learn things about yourself that you didn’t even know you were saying, or needed to say.”
