Charli XCX’s “Vroom Vroom”: Hear The SOPHIE-Produced Track

Charli XCX recently explained she was ditching the sound of her sophomore LP Sucker (which itself ditched the Tumblr pop sound of her True Romance debut), aiming to create an electronic party album. To help her flesh that out, she enlisted the hyper-pop services of British waveform architect and dildo peddler SOPHIE. Today (October 20), Charli took over Beats 1 to premiere one of their collabs, called “Vroom Vroom.”

The song was recorded in Sweden in January, and it’s unlike anything she’s released before. It starts with Charli chirping out a playground chant over a sparse, lurching beat before she breaks out into an airy chorus, singing “All my life, I’ve been waiting for a good time.” But even as she lets off a sugar rush of a hook, the production never truly breaks open; instead it gradually builds with blasts of percussion and gummy synth rushes popping in and out of frame.

“Vroom Vroom” is set to appear on XCX’s next album, but her rep told Spin that it isn’t the lead single. Hear it below.
