Missy Elliott picks up where she left off with massive banger "WTF." Watch now.

Missy Elliott picked up where she left off yesterday (November 12) by dropping a killer club banger with forward-thinking production and a mind-bogglingly brilliant video. And fans were ready and waiting for her return. “WTF (Where They From)” is currently sitting at number three on iTunes and racked up an impressive five million views in less than 24 hours. With numbers like that, the veteran rapper can expect a lofty debut on the Billboard Hot 100 next week.

However, the 44-year-old’s comeback isn’t without controversy. “WTF (Where They From)” is being interpreted as a Miley Cyrus diss track by many music commentators. And the lyrics back that up. “The dance you doing is dumb, how they do where you from,” Missy raps. “Stickin’ out your tongue girl, but you know you’re too young.” It does seem like a blatant diss given the 22-year-old’s penchant for twerking and tongue gymnastics, but there are a couple of reasons why it could just be a coincidence.

Firstly, “WTF (Where They From)” was produced by Pharrell ie. the man behind many of Miley’s Bangerz-era club bangers (“4×4,” “#GETITRIGHT” and “On My Own”). As such, it would be hypocritical of him to jump on a diss track — particularly when he asked her to feature on twerk-tastic G I R L anthem “Come Get It Bae.” Also, Missy has gone 20 years without beefing with anyone. Maybe she’s just making a larger point about cultural appropriation in the music industry?
