M.I.A. Returns With “Borders”: Listen

M.I.A. returns with “Borders,” another taste from her sprawling Matahdatah visual album following the “Swords/Warriors” video and news that she’s working on new material with Skrillex. Considering that the overall theme of this project is a “full-length album and film experience about borders,” then this new track might serve as something of a centerpiece.

These big ideas about nationhood and the movements of peoples and cultures are especially timely with the Syrian refugee crisis, but M.I.A. doesn’t seem to offer anything substantive or impassioned in this particular song. Instead, she primarily lists things like “freedom,” “your privilege” and “identities” followed by an almost indifferent “What’s up with that?” response. Maybe she’s tired of trying to shed light on the same issues.
