Stream Kita Alexander’s ‘Like You Want To’ EP: Idolator Premiere

Kita Alexander seemingly arrived out of nowhere in June with summery, ’80s-influenced anthem “My Own Way.” The track effortlessly evoked West Coast pop and was widely compared to Haim — a surprise given the singer/songwriter’s Australian roots and complete disinterest in modern music. She followed that up with shimmery, Stevie Nicks-channelling gem “Like You Want To,” which serves as the official introduction to her similarly-titled debut EP.

“She was always my idol,” Kita says of the Fleetwood Mac great. “Her magical aura really drew me in. Her lyrics, her melodies, how she’s rock and roll but still keeps it feminine. She’s such a major influence in my life.” The impact of the “Leather And Lace” icon can also be felt on EP highlight “Wild Heart” — a euphoric synth-pop moment with an instantly hummable chorus. Like the lead single, it was produced by Ben Romans (Carly Rae Jepsen’s “E•MO•TION” and “Let’s Get Lost”).

But it’s not all retro-leaning. The Brisbane teenager worked with producer Michael Keenan on “Plain Sight,” who is best known for collaborating with hip-hop artists. “At first I didn’t want to work with him because I’m not into hip-hop,” Kita admits. “Surprisingly, I love working with hip-hop guys now because I can still show them my direction, and push them on my 80’s vibe, but they bring in a whole new element.”

The four-song set is rounded out by “High Tops,” which the newcomer wrote with members of Australian rock band The Delta Riggs. It delivers a slightly grittier sound, which gives some indication of Kita’s versatility and the scope of her debut LP (due in 2016). Listen to the rising star’s excellent debut EP in full below. You can download Like You Want To from iTunes on November 27.
