"Black Friday" Raps
Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole rapped on each other's beats in honor of "Black Friday."

J. Cole is the rare artist who sells records — lots of them — while getting largely overlooked by press. His third album, 2014 Forest Hills Drive, was the first rap release without features to go platinum in 25 years. Remember, he also landed a feature on Janet Jackson‘s comeback single. Yet he seems largely anonymous compared to his hip-hop peers, from Drake to Big Sean and Kendrick Lamar.

Based on the debut trailer, which premiered December 5, J. Cole’s upcoming HBO concert film promises a closer look into his unusual fame. J. Cole Forest Hills Drive: Homecoming has the rapper heading to his native Fayetteville, N.C., to perform the titular album in its entirety. (This is fitting, since his childhood home inspired that same music.) Pal Drake and mentor Jay Z also join him on stage to help him celebrate his achievements.

J. Cole’s HBO concert special airs January 6, 10 p.m. EST and PST, and will be available on HBO NOW and HBO Go. Watch the debut trailer below.
