Watch 5 Seconds Of Summer’s Acoustic Rework Of “Hey Everybody!” On ‘Conan’

Up to this point, I have insulated myself from 5 Seconds Of Summer. As a lifelong rock fan who values his sanity, I figured this was the wisest course of action. This master plan ended with their (properly credited) Duran Duran retread “Hey Everybody!” It’s actually better than I was expecting based on just looking at them. And then the whole Chad Kroeger angle emerged in their Rolling Stone interview, and as a guy who lived through and at times delighted in the butt-rock era, I was properly intrigued.

People like me are supposed to hate little mall-rebel snots like 5SOS, but to be honest, they are are completely tolerable! They are not the saviors of guitar music. But as someone who witnessed the knuckle-dragging lows of Puddle Of Mudd, Hinder and Saliva, I can definitively say 5SoS are not the genre’s death knell, either.

So watch them perform “Hey Everybody!” — seated with acoustic guitars for maximum rock authenticity — on last night’s Conan. Or don’t. The rock universe could give a shit either way.
