Our take on the loss of pop and rock's one-of-a-kind, unrivaled chameleon.

René Angélil, Céline Dion‘s husband, has died after a long battle with throat cancer. PEOPLE broke the news today (January 14).

A rep shared this statement with the magazine: “Rene Angelil, 73, passed away this morning at his home in Las Vegas after a long and courageous battle against cancer. The family requests that their privacy be respected at the moment.”

Angélil (who helped managed Dion’s career) and the “My Heart Will Go On” singer first met in 1980, and got married in 1994. The couple have three children: 14-year-old René-Charles, and 5-year-old twins Nelson and Eddy. Rene is also survived by his children from a previous relationship: Anne-Marie, Patrick and Jean-Pierre.

In a USA Today interview back in August, the artist shared an update on Rene’s struggling health. “I’ll say, ‘You’re scared? I understand. Talk to me about it.’ And René says to me, ‘I want to die in your arms.’ OK, fine, I’ll be there, you’ll die in my arms,” she said.

Celine shared a message to fans about the passing of her husband, stating more information will be provided in the coming days. See her Facebook statement below.
