Future Surprise-Releases New Mixtape ‘Purple Reign’: Listen
Future is continuing his prolific streak — that is, four mixtapes, one album and a joint Drake release within the past year or so — into 2016. Today (January 15) he released Purple Reign, a free mixtape that shares the same name as his upcoming, 22-date tour with Ty Dolla Sign.
While the Dungeon Family descendant sounds more alert than he did in his codeine-fueled No. 1 album DS2 (released last July), he still sounds as petty as ever when talking women (“She telling lies about me because she ain’t shit”) and earnest while honoring his Atlanta drug-dealing community (“Salute”).
Future’s What a Time to Be Alive rap partner Drake also makes an appearance, though not via rap verses; instead, he lends his voice for a tag for Purple Reign executive producers dynamic duo DJ Esco and Metro Boomin — “Esco and Boomin, they got it on smash.”
