Birdy Interview
We spoke to Birdy about her second album, touring America and writing new music.

Birdy leaves the gloomy covers (breakthrough hit “Skinny Love”) and somber ballads (The Fault In Our Stars soundtrack cut “Not About Angels”) behind on third LP Beautiful Lies (due March 25). Spearheaded by lead single “Keeping Your Head Up,” the 19-year-old’s new album finds her exploring a more upbeat pop sound courtesy of collaborations with producers Steve Mac (Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez), Jim Abbiss (Arctic Monkeys and Adele) and MyRiot (London Grammar).

“This is my coming of age record,” the teenager explains. “I’ve learned so much in the last few years and have been able to use the many experiences — good and bad — as inspiration when writing this album. This is the album that I’ve been able to steer most confidently and proudly, from the writing to the production to the artwork.” As for the predominant theme? “A lot of the album is about finding light in the dark and overcoming the times when we feel completely lost.”

The reinvention of Birdy as a harbinger of light via euphoric pop music is reflected in the “Keeping Your Head Up” music video. The Brit floats through a spooky rave, surrounded by masked partygoers, before joining in at the end. She looks positively angelic in a white dress as she hovers above dancers in the big finale. Watch up top.
