The release of Cyndi Lauper‘s album of country covers, Detour (out May 6) is three months away, and the Emmy, Grammy and Tony winner has now offered up a twang-filled taste of what’s in store via a cover of 1959 classic “Heartaches By The Number.” The song, penned by Harlan Howard, was originally released by both Ray Price and Guy Mitchell in 1959, with the former’s version peaking at #2 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart and the latter making #1 on the Hot 100. But, as Lauper explained to Rolling Stone recently, she felt she needed to find her own zone when recording her rendition.

“I had to divorce myself from that and find a place where this music sat in my voice, where the sweet spots were, how I could bring it to life and how I could bring a story to it,” Lauper told Rolling Stone. “Because it’s all stories, everything is a story and you have to be able to tell a good story.”
