All four Idolator editors review and rate Zayn Malik's debut solo single "Pillowtalk."

Zayn Malik did with his debut single what his former bandmates One Direction were unable to do with 15 singles: Topped the Billboard Hot 100. The new chart sees Zayn’s “Pillowtalk” debut at #1, thus bumping off Justin Bieber‘s “Love Yourself” after one week on the throne.

Billboard points out that not only is Zayn only the 25th artist to have a song enter atop the main chart, he’s also the only UK artist to do so with their debut. Altogether, “Pillowtalk” sold 267,000 downloads in the States in its first week of release, and it was streamed 22.3 million times.

In the UK, One Direction have topped the singles chart four times since they left The X Factor and became a major label act. Stateside, however, the closest they came to the top was when “Best Song Ever,” the lead single off 1D’s third album Midnight Memories, reached #2 on the Hot 100. The band also managed to reach #3 twice in America, with “Live While We’re Young” and “Drag Me Down.”

Looking ahead, it remains to be seen if “Pillowtalk” can stay in command for a second week. Sales on iTunes for the single appear to have cooled down, as it’s currently down to #8 on the digital retailer’s song chart.
