You might not be familiar with the name Kirby Lauryen yet, but chances are you’ve heard one of the songs she has penned for other artists. The Mississippi-born soul singer had a hand in writing Beyonce’s Tidal-exclusive ballad “Die With You,” Kanye West’s “Only One” and Rihanna’s star-studded collaboration “FourFiveSeconds.” Those stripped-back, soulful anthems give you some idea of what to expect from the Roc Nation signee’s sublime “Loved By You.”

“Bless my soul, I’ve been alone too long,” Kirby begins the track over hazy guitar strings. “Somebody without someone is no one at all.” The newcomer then battles her insecurities (“jealousy is getting the best of me”) before laying her cards on the table. “I heard that heaven ain’t easy to get to, the closest I’ll get might be right next to you.” This is beautifully executed retro-soul. From the emotionally-charged vocal to the painfully vulnerable lyrics, “Loved By You” heralds the arrival of an important new talent. Listen below.
