Adele won the first award of the night at the 36th BRITs by picking up the statue for Best British Female. In a touching moment, the 25 singer joined a growing chorus of other pop artists by saying she wanted to take the moment to “publicly support Kesha.”

Later, after performing “Love Yourself” with Justin Bieber, James Bay picked up the award for Best British Male. Last year Bay won the Critics’ Choice award. This year, the 25-year-old stands to emerge triumphant in three other categories.
