While in the end Lady Gaga and Diane Warren‘s “Til It Happens to You” lost out on the Oscar for Best Original Song to Sam Smith‘s “Writing’s On The Wall,” it was the performance of the piano ballad from The Hunting Ground that stood out the most from Sunday (February 28) night’s big movie awards show.

Gaga’s emotional showing with the song, which brought her to tears while singing and moved the audience to their feet for a standing ovation, was completed with the pop queen being joined on stage by over 50 survivors of sexual assault.

Diane Warren and Gaga collaborated on “Til It Happens To You” for Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering’s 2015 documentary The Hunting Ground, which focuses on rape on college campuses. The song’s powerful music video, which doesn’t shy away from the heavy material at hand, premiered in September.

The song was lent an extra does of gravity at the Academy Awards last night when United States Vice President Joe Biden took the stage to introduce Lady Gaga before her performance.
