Sam Smith Hated His Oscars Performance
Sam Smith's morning after the Academy Awards isn't exactly going as you'd expect.

Sam Smith made headlines for his Academy Awards win for Best Original Song, though they weren’t exactly favorable. “How Sam Smith Got It Wrong: 11 Notable Out Oscar Winners,” Rolling Stone wrote, after he implied during his speech that he was the first.

The “Writing’s On The Wall” singer has since apologized to screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, who was among the first to correct him, and cleared the air regarding his speech.

“Second openly gay man to win an oscar or third or fourth or 100th, It wasn’t my point,” Sam says on Twitter. “My point was to shine some light on the LGBT community who i love so dearly. Apologies for the mix up @DLanceBlack I’ll be sure to check out your films now x Belated Congrats on the Oscar x.”

Following Sam’s Oscars win, Dustin posted his acceptance speech from when he won Best Screenplay for Milk in 2009, to show that actually, another openly gay man has won an Oscar before. “If you have no idea who I am, it may be time to stop texting my fiancé [Olympic swimmer Tom Daley].” He seemed offended, though after Sam apologized, Dustin said that the Internet blew his comments out of proportion.

“Well this has proven to be a lively day on Twitter,” Dustin said after the fact. “From humor to anger. The former my intent… in defense of history. Much love to all.

“Dear Internet: and are pals. They text. Thus my surprise Sam took me for a closet case! Feel free to laugh.”
