The singer and producer Ricky Reed talk how they got people saying yes with "No."

We’re used to hearing celebrities say it is an honor to be nominated for all these award shows, to where it feels cliché. But when Fetty Wap says this, you’d be foolish not to believe him. XXL caught up with the Paterson, N.J., rapper following the 2016 Grammy Awards, where he was nominated twice, but didn’t win any awards for his breakout hit “Trap Queen.” And during the interview, Fetty stressed that he never expected to win, so that to be recognized was enough.

“[F]or the Grammys to even notice me, that’s big, you know what I’m saying?” he says, adding, “In my head, I already knew I wasn’t going to win. I told my camp like, ‘I won’t get my hopes up high.’ I’m real regular with it. I just so happen to have a song that the people like and it was Grammy nominated. That’s the way I feel. People keep asking me which category I thought I should’ve been a part of and stuff like that. I don’t have a say in what I should’ve been a part of because I didn’t create the Grammys. I’m just happy to be a part of it. It’s still history.”

That outcome may have been for the best, if Fetty Wap’s past wins are any indication. Last summer, when he won his first-ever award courtesy of Music Choice, he got unexpectedly emotional. “I never won nothing in my life before,” he said, before he teared up — the sort of honesty that would have had the Grammys crowd crying as well. Revisit the touching moment below.
