Shawn Mendes Premieres New Song “Ruin” Live: Watch
Vine-turned-Top 40 sensation Shawn Mendes kicked off his world tour by premiering a new song at New York’s Radio City Music Hall.
With “Ruin,” he goes from channeling the folkish Ed Sheeran in his 2015 debut Handwritten to resembling a young John Mayer as he sings the blues. And it was hard to tell what got the crowd screaming louder — when he hit those falsetto notes, or when he had the crowd singing the refrain “Do I ever cross your mind?” as if that was actually in question.
Regardless, the resemblance between Shawn’s new material and John’s discography isn’t a coincidence. Back in January, in between promises for more electric guitar and the best vibes in Handwritten‘s follow-up, he tweeted at John, asking for a feature: “what are the odds you cut a solo on a song of mine? Am i crazy?” Check out the live debut of “Ruin” below.
