Prince honored David Bowie during his concert last night (March 25) in Toronto. The show, as with the rest of his ongoing tour, was billed “A Piano and a Microphone.” And so Prince performed rock ‘n’ roll anthem “Heroes” with exactly that, his rendition being slower and even a bit mournful, according to fan footage posted later that night. It was a fitting tribute, from one gender- and genre-bending artist to another.

This isn’t the first time that Prince has paid tribute to the Thin White Duke. Two years ago at Essence Music Festival in New Orleans, he and famed disco bassist Nile Rodgers performed the title track for David’s 1983 album Let’s Dance. Of course, Prince was in extra good hands — Nile, then known for his work in Chic, had produced the album.
