Lil Wayne Sues Universal Over Profits Made From Drake, Nicki Minaj
Lil Wayne isn’t happy with Universal Music Group.
In a new federal lawsuit, he claims that the label and royalties distribution organization SoundExchange owe him money for discovering and fostering the careers of Young Money signees like Drake, Nicki Minaj and Tyga. Lil Wayne is seeking at least $40 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Where did the money that Drake, Nicki and Tyga allegedly go? According to Lil Wayne’s lawsuit, Universal “diverted” Young Money royalties to pay itself back for a $100 million advance it gave to Young Money’s parent label, Birdman‘s Cash Money — “debts that were neither incurred by nor were the obligations of Lil Wayne.”
“It should be no surprise that we learned of the lawyer’s complaint through the news media,” a Universal spokesman said to THR. “We don’t intend to dignify this with further public comment except to say that we will vigorously contest it and that the merits of our case will carry the day.”
