‘The Voice’: Jordan Smith Performs, The Top 12 Revealed On Results Show

Wednesday (April 13) night’s episode of The Voice marked two crucial turning points. First, it was finally time to start remembering some names other than Christina Aguilera, Pharrell Williams, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton. As the voters and coaches whittled down the Top 24 into the Top 12, it officially became reasonable to start having opinions on front runners, and to stop referring to contestants as “that one with the beard on Team Blake.”

Secondly: it was time for former contestants to make their grand reappearances! On the bummer end of the spectrum was Season 1 winner Javier Colon, who took time from his busy (?) schedule to promote his new single and album, “Gravity.” The sadness here is that he was given roughly 30 seconds and is no longer relevant enough to perform during the early stages of the Voice playoffs. On the still somewhat hopeful end of that spectrum is Season 9 champ Jordan Smith, who performed his single “Stand in the Light.” You’ve still got it, kid: now hold on to it as tightly as you can.

In addition to the re-emergence of ghosts of season’s past, all of the current contestants performed with their teams before half of them were booted. Here’s how all that went, and – more importantly – the results:

Team Pharrell performs together for the first time (and, for half of them, the last time)! Moushumi, Emily Keener, Daniel Passino, Caity Peters, Lacy Mandigo, and Hannah Huston sing Swedish House Mafia’s “Don’t You Worry Child.” There are some low moments for the sixsome (cough cough Lacy cough cough), but it’s a lovely swan song for the three about to bid the competition farewell.

Team Blake’s Mary Sarah, Adam Wakefield, Katie Basden, Paxton Ingram, Justin Whisnant, and Joe Maye perform Avicii’s “Hey Brother,” and they are – quite simply – terrible. It’s as though they all practiced separately (if they practiced at all), and then decided to just kind of wing it on the harmony front. Yikes.

Team Christina’s Alisan Porter, Kata Hay, Tamar Davis, Bryan Bautista, Ryan Quinn, and Nick Hagelin sing Grace Potter And The Nocturnals’ “Stars.” Unlike Team Blake, these folks actually sound like they got together and practiced. It pays off with a charming performance.

Team Adam’s Shalyah Fearing, Owen Danoff, Laith Al-Saadi, Nate Butler, Brian Nhira and Caroline Burns sing Elton John’s “Your Song.” Shalyah, notably, kills it — and her backup singers aren’t half bad either.

Shortly after each performance, the hand holding ends and Carson Daly gets down to the business of announcing results. Here’s who’s moving on to next week’s Top 12:

TEAM PHARRELL

Living to see another week: Hannah Huston, Daniel Passino Saved by Pharrell: Emily Keener Headed home: Moushumi, Caity Peters, Lacy Mandigo

There are no real surprises on Team Pharrell, although good on Daniel Passino for his comeback advance!

TEAM BLAKE

Living to see another week: Adam Wakefield, Mary Sarah Saved by Blake: Paxton Ingram Headed home: Justin Whisnant, Katie Basden, Joe Maye

Give a big hug to your Twitter followers, Mary Sarah, because they overlooked your disappointing performance to give you another shot.

TEAM CHRISTINA

Living to see another week: Alisan Porter, Nick Hagelin Saved by Christina: Bryan Bautista Headed home: Kata Hay, Ryan Quinn, Tamar Davis

It’s no surprise that Curly Sue moves forward, but good for Nick Hagelin, the second comeback artist of the night to make it through! What a spokesman for second chances. It seems a little early to say farewell to Tamar Davis, but such are the tough choices Xtina needs to make in life.

TEAM ADAM

Living to see another week: Shalyah Fearing, Laith Al-Saadi Saved by Adam: Owen Danoff Headed home: Nate Butler, Brian Nhira, Caroline Burns

Bold save with Owen Danoff, Adam! With all that talk Tuesday night about how Caroline Burns was primed for an explosive next performance, she seemed like the shoe-in for the coach save. Arguably more surprising than that pink hair.

And thus ends the last huge cut of the season. Next week, the odds return to ever in their favor with 12 contestants performing and only one headed home.
