Some Dude Is Suing Kanye West For Duping Everyone Into Signing Up For Tidal

A man is suing Kanye West and Tidal for falsely announcing that West’s album The Life Of Pablo would be available exclusively on the streaming service.

The AP reports that Justin Baker-Rhett filed a proposed class action lawsuit today in San Francisco, alleging that he was “duped” into subscribing to Tidal based on the TLOP promise, effectively saying he never would’ve signed up for a Tidal subscription if he knew the album was coming to other platforms. At first glance this seems like a flimsy basis for a lawsuit, but TMZ cites an added claim that the surge in Tidal membership due to the exclusivity strategy was meant to get new users “paying for Tidal’s rescue.”

Whatever the outcome, this “misled subscriber” issue makes for a peculiar unforeseen element of the new streaming landscape. And it’s unlikely to bolster Tidal’s reputation.
