New Find: Sophia Somajo Steps Outside The Box On “Sapphire”
There’s a growing number of artists that combine experimental electronic production with perky pop vocals to create a demented, yet oddly familiar hybrid. Charli XCX led the charge with SOPHIE-produced “Vroom Vroom,” while Flume took a similar approach on Kai-assisted anthem “Never Be Like You.” It’s a slight of hand that underground Swedish diva Sophia Somajo has been pulling off for years without the assistance of big name producer.
Take the 31-year-old’s new single. “Saphire” effortlessly combines sterile, metallic synths (courtesy of Björn Hallberg) with subtle melodies and a soaring pop chorus. “It’s about chasing after something that you know you cannot get,” Sophie told The Line Of Best Fit. “I have been digging after this jewel for so many years. My fingers are bleeding and my heart is tired. With this song I am letting him know that I am letting him go.” Listen to the track, which will feature on the singer’s upcoming EP Freudian Slip Vol. 1, below.
