It’s always interesting to hear about the bolts and screws that make a song come to life, and Song Exploder – a podcast hosted by Hrishikesh Hirway where artists break down their own songs – does just that. This week’s episode focuses on Carly Rae Jepsen, as the “Run Away With Me” songstress dissects her whimsy E•MO•TION closing track “When I Needed You.”

In the podcast, CRJ discusses the brutal break-up that inspired the song, the original late-night New York City recording sessions with longtime collaborator Tavish Crow, as well as the synth-laden instrumental demos that Dan Nigro and Nate Campany sent her later on. The episode also features commentary from producer Ariel Rechtshaid, who tied it all together.
