Carly Rae Jepsen’s Next Album Will Be Disco-Inspired
Carly Rae Jepsen channeled old school Madonna on her 2015 album E·MO·TION. For its follow-up, however, she is referencing a time before “Lucky Star.” She tells Vancouver Sun that she has been revisiting ’70s music, at least for the time being.
“I can’t explain what we’re doing right now, but we’re very much into disco-y things, whatever this next album may or may not turn out to be,” she said. “But I’m very much referencing ABBA a lot, and the Bee Gees, all of that stuff.”
To date, ABBA remains Sweden’s biggest musical export thanks to international hits like “Mamma Mia” and “Dancing Queen.” The Bee Gees originally emerged as Australia’s answer to the Beatles, though they went on to mold disco thanks to their contributions to the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. (“Stayin’ Alive,” anyone?)
“It’s fun to dig into oldies and see what you can celebrate about it, like a good movie or good song — to take your favorite pieces of something and add some new stuff to create something different,” Carly Rae adds.
