Beyoncé received the coveted CFDA Fashion Icon Award last night (June 6) in New York City. The Council of Fashion Designers Of America usually announces the winner far in advance of the ceremony, but — perhaps inspired by Bey’s album releases — they kept this one under wraps until the night of.

Beyoncé, wearing a pinstripe Givenchy suit and wide-brim hat that Lemonade viewers would be familiar with, arrived at the red carpet at the Hammerstein Ballroom with Jay Z and their daughter, Blue Ivy. Designer Diane Von Furstenberg presented her with the award, and the star gave a moving acceptance speech, explaining how her fashion sense began with her mother and grandmother, who were both seamstresses.

“As long as I can remember, fashion has always been a part of my life,” she started. “When we were starting out in Destiny’s Child, high-end labels, they didn’t really want to dress four black, country, curvy girls. And we couldn’t afford designer dresses and couture. My mother was rejected from every showroom in New York. But like my grandmother, she used her talent and her creativity to give her children their dreams.”
