Shirley Manson talks us through Garbage's new LP 'Strange Little Birds.'

Garbage debuts at number 14 on Billboard 200 with sixth LP Strange Little Birds this week — not bad for an independently-released album from a band well into their third decade of existence. They take it back to their analog roots this time around with a collection of raw, brutally honest songs that wouldn’t sound out of place on their seminal self-titled debut. As such, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that lead single “Empty” sounds really, really good live.

The legendary rockers performed the track on Jimmy Kimmel Live last night (June 20) and they tore up the stage with a blistering display. Why the decision to take it back to the beginning sonically? “Historically, we’ve been known for these really perfectly-crafted records,” Shirley Manson told Idolator in March. “As proud of that as I am, I also feel that sometimes changing things up in the way that you approach things is really good and really healthy and necessary when you get to our age.”

“This time around when we got into the studio we were all trying to make the performance as good as we could so that we didn’t have to go back and use Pro Tools to redo it and cheat, basically. There’s something that gets captured when you go in for your first couple takes. There’s some energy and we really wanted to do that.” Watch Garbage in action up top.
