Melanie Martinez Interview
We speak to Melanie about concept albums and the future travails of Cry Baby.

Emerging from a giant crib on a stage dressed up like a baby’s bedroom, Melanie Martinez introduced her alter-ego, Cry Baby, to the masses on Jimmy Kimmel Live. The 21-year-old performed 2015 hit “Pity Party” to a sea of fans, who sang along to every word of the Lesley Gore-sampling anthem. If you haven’t delved into the rising star’s weird and wonderful alternate universe yet, this is a fairly good place to start. Just make sure to grab a bib and go with the flow.

Melanie’s debut LP, Cry Baby, has taken on a life of its own since arriving in August last year. The demented concept album debuted at number 6 on the Billboard 200 and is still sitting pretty in the top 50 close to a year later. This is that rare album that is being discovered, shared and enjoyed as a whole body of work. That level of engagement and fan loyalty is extremely rare in 2016 and promises big things for the follow-up. Watch the “Alphabet Boy” singer in action up top.
