Hear ye, music nerds!

The latest episode of Song Exploder – a podcast hosted by Hrishikesh Hirway where artists break down their own songs – is here, and this segment focuses on Grimes (real name Claire Boucher) and her head-rattling thrasher  “Kill V. Maim.”

Boucher explains that the origin of Art Angels standout came about when her friend told her she makes “cute music.”

“I was jamming with a friend, and this person was really good at making really aggressive music,” she said. “He kept doing this cute little plucky things, and I was like ‘No, no, let’s make a hard song.’ And he was like ‘No no you make cute music.’ I was so horrified.. So I went home after that sort of wanting to prove that I could make something that’s going to be really aggressive that I would want to play during an action sequence in a movie.”

She continued, “I had been watching Godfather and Godfather II, and I just had this thing in my mind, this insane movie that would be the Godfather with vampires. A mixture of Godfather and Twilight. I wanted to make the song that would play during the trailer of this fictional movie in my mind.” The Canadian singer later described the track as “probably my favorite song I’ve ever made.”
