Sia Tops Single Chart With “Cheap Thrills,” Katy & Britney Debut In Top 20

All overplayed things must come to an end, and while Drake continues to reign supreme on the album chart, his non-consecutive 10-week run atop the Billboard Hot 100 is halted this week by Sia‘s “Cheap Thrills.” This marks the Australian singer’s first stint at #1 in the US as a lead artist, but not her first time having a hand in a chart-topping single. (Sia co-wrote Rihanna‘s 2012 #1 “Diamonds.”)

As Billboard — or rather, a Billboard reader — points out, Sia is now the first female artist 40 or over (she’ll be 41 in December) to top the H0t 100 since Madonna did so with “Music” in 2000, when she was 42.

Sia isn’t the oldest one heard on “Cheap Thrills,” however: Featured singer/rapper Sean Paul is 43. And, if we want to keep with the fab 40s and go one step further, Greg Kurstin, the song’s producer, is 47.

As for Paul, he last topped the Hot 100 a full decade ago, when his single “Temperature” hit #1 in April 2006.

Coming full circle with Rihanna and “Diamonds,” Sia originally wrote “Cheap Thrills” with Rihanna in mind, for inclusion on the latter’s most recent album, Anti. RiRi passed, and the song wound up on Sia’s 2016 release, This Is Acting.

Outside the Top 10 this week, Katy Perry‘s Olympic anthem “Rise” debuts at #11, while Britney Spears“Make Me” goes in at #17.
