Twelve years after giving the 2004 Democratic National Convention speech that would eventually pave the way for his path to the presidency, Barack Obama captivated audiences once again on Wednesday (July 27) by delivering nearly 50 minutes of words that summed up his thoughts on his time in the oval office, an upbeat view of America and why nominee Hillary Clinton is the most qualified candidate to succeed him, all while slamming Clinton’s Republican rival Donald Trump and acknowledging the impressive primary run of Senator Bernie Sanders.

“Hillary’s got her share of critics. She has been caricatured by the Right and by some on the Left,” Obama said. “She has been accused of everything you can imagine and some things that you cannot. But she knows that’s what happens when you’re under a microscope for 40 years. She knows that sometimes during those 40 years, she’s made mistakes, just like I have, just like we all do. That’s what happens when we try.”

President Obama’s speech capped what was easily the most electrifying night of the convention so far. On the political front, Vice President Joe Biden, Clinton’s running mate Tim Kaine, California Governor Jerry Brown and Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy also spoke, as did Felicia Sanders and Polly Sheppard, survivors of the 2015 shooting at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in downtown Charleston, and Chritine Leinonen, mother of Orlando shooting victim Christopher Leinonen.

Following musical performances earlier in the week by Demi Lovato, Paul Simon, Alicia Keys and Andra Day, the Broadway For Orlando singers took to the stage at Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center to perform their charity single cover of “What The World Needs Now Is Love.”
