Janelle Monae has previewed “Hum Along and Dance (Gotta Get Down),” her contribution to Nas and Baz Luhrmann‘s  The Get Down soundtrack.

For this song, Janelle had the chance to sample the Temptations‘ “Hum Along and Dance,” though as covered by the Jackson 5. From there, while the original hook goes, “Ain’t no words to this song,” Janelle sings words to match the instrumental’s urgency.

“There’s a fear in the air, and there’s blood on the floor / Hear a deafening scream crying out for more / The city’s on fire, smoke is burning my eyes / I’ve got one more chance, I need you to come along and just hum along and dance,” she sings in the snippet.

“I was envisioning a world where color wasn’t the root or center of attention,” Janelle tells Ebro Darden on Beats 1 about the song. “It wasn’t about black and white, green and yellow, but we were all on the dance floor, living and breathing as one.”

The Get Down soundtrack is out August 12 on Apple Music. Hear a snippet of Janelle Monae’s “Hum Along and Dance (Gotta Get Down)” below.
