How does Kim Kardashian decide who she wants to call out publicly? In a new video for her website and app, she and Jonathan Cheban break down that imperfect science. That Bette Midler beef was a prime example, even though Kim says it felt weird at the time.

“It’s just because she’s such a legend.” Kim says of Bette.

“We also had a phone call about it,” Jonathan says, “because she’s such a legend that you don’t want to say something that is going to be disgraceful even to her and to you.”

Adds Kim, “You do you. Let me be me. No need to be rude or tear someone else down.”

Kim had posted that nude selfie, when Bette said, “If Kim wants us to see a part of her we’ve never seen, she’s gonna have to swallow the camera.” In response, Kim joked that Bette should “send nudes,” before saying, “I really didn’t want to bring up how you sent me a gift awhile back trying to be a fake friend then come at me.”

Kim also explains when and why she even bothers at times. “When I feel like someone is being fake all the time, I’ll say something. It’s usually really publicly,” she says. Here’s looking at you too, Taylor Swift.

Meanwhile, Bette hasn’t stopped making jokes about Kim. Earlier this year, she called for her to “put your selfie to work,” by spreading awareness for Stages for Success, her initiative with the Jeckyl Foundation to modernize public school auditoriums. See her cheeky call to action below.
