Premiere: Mallrat’s “Tokyo Drift”

We featured Australian newcomer Mallrat in a recent new artist spotlight, and now the 17-year-old is back with killer new song “Tokyo Drift,” and it totally validates our choice.

I’m not clever enough to think up a portmanteau for the peculiar blend of shoegaze/hip-hop/bedroom pop that this is. Chillwave is accurate enough, but this is more like the mix of downcast beats and sculpted melodies that Charli XCX was toying with on her early mixtapes. Also, Mallrat tells us the song is dedicated to sadboy king Yung Lean, which somehow makes complete sense.

“Tokyo Drift” was produced by Rey Reel and it’s off the singer’s Uninvited EP, which drops tomorrow (August 12). Check out our premiere below.
