Demi Lovato Explains Why She Laughed At Her Mom’s Zika Virus Joke
Demi Lovato has responded to criticism she received for a Snapchat post over the weekend. “Everybody down in Rio gonna get the Zika virus,” her mother said, as Demi cracked up, which had people blasting them for making light of a public health crisis. “In no way did I mean to offend anyone last night,” she said on Twitter. “I was laughing at how southern my mom sounded, not the issue at hand. Deepest apologies.”
Not even ten minutes later, though, she said, “If you watch everything I do, you’re still a fan.. I ain’t goin nowhere bitches.”
Yes, the #DemiLovatoIsOverParty hashtag was a bit much. Snapchat posts are seconds long, which doesn’t allow for much context. (Indeed, her mother delivers the comment about Zika in something of a drawl, but it’s hard to glean from ten seconds why how “Southern” she sounds is that funny.) But all Demi says is that she’s sorry that you’re offended — a classic non-apology. Really, she’s just annoyed at the criticism, “bitches.”
