When last we checked in with Chord Overstreet, the 27-year-old actor was paying tribute to his onetime Glee co-star Cory Monteith upon the third anniversary of the latter’s death. Over a month later, however, comes news that Overstreet has decided to follow in the footsteps of another of his former castmates, Lea Michele, by taking a shot at a singing career through a major label deal.

Today brings the release of Chord’s debut single, “Homeland,” via Demi Lovato, Nick Jonas and their shared manager Phil McIntyre‘s Island imprint Safehouse Records. It’s a wistful pop-rock ballad that finds the crooner pining away for the place where his “soul comes from” — i.e. his hometown of Nashville, Tennessee.

Chord, the son of award-winning country singer-songwriter Paul Overstreet, sounds more Jon Bon Jovi than slick Glee karaoke-pop here, which may surprise some longtime fans of the series. But maybe that’s exactly what the budding musician needs to move away from being typecast.

Give “Homeland” a listen above, and see if you think Chord’s got the chops to eke out a pop career.
