MTV Video Music Awards 2016: Beyonce’s Medley Raises The Bar
If you needed another reminder that Beyonce is currently playing on a completely different level than the rest of the game, sit down and watch her breathtaking medley at tonight’s (August 28) MTV Video Music Awards at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The game-changing diva blew away all-comers by performing five tracks from sixth LP, Lemonade. She began with a haunting rendition of album-opener “Pray You Catch Me,” which found the 34-year-old and her dancers dressed in angelic garb until they were symbolically shot down with red lighting. It was powerful, intense and confronting.
Queen Bey then switched gears by dusting off rising radio hit “Hold Up.” The superstar showed off her famous curves in a sexy black leather leotard and danced her way along a runway, before grabbing a baseball bat and taking out a camera. As far as highlights of the show go, this will be hard to top. That transitioned into a fun rendition of fiery bop “Sorry.” After showing off some blistering choreography, Beyonce surprised fans by moving onto Jack White-assisted rock anthem “Don’t Hurt Yourself.” The White Stripes frontman wasn’t in attendance, but she didn’t need the help. The hitmaker proved her rock chops by head banging with the best of them.
As usual with Bey, she left the best for last — tearing into a scintillating performance of “Formation.” It’s common knowledge that Beyonce is always on beat, but this was a master class in performance art with brilliant dancing, perfect vocals and a powerful statement. The performance ended with Mrs. Carter and her dancers literally in formation — positioned around the stage in the shape of the female symbol. She finished the show by thanking the ladies of the world and was met with an extended standing ovation. Watch below.
