Law & Order mogul Dick Wolf knows a thing or two about crime series, and Zayn Malik is well-versed in the ways of being a pop star. Somehow these two are coming together to co-produce Boys, a scripted drama revolving around boy bands, for NBC. Per Deadline, Boys “follows the formation of a hugely successful boy band and captures all the excitement, competition and fun, but also provides an inside look into the pressure that follows.”

“Dick Wolf is a legend,” Malik said in a statement, “and the opportunity to work with him and NBC to create a compelling drama series is awesome.”

One person not thrilled with the deal, it seems, is Simon Cowell, whose UK series The X Factor was responsible for launching Zayn to stardom along with the rest of his former One Direction boy bandmates in 2010.

“That will be interesting. Nothing surprises me anymore,” Cowell said to Entertainment Tonight last night, when asked about Zayn’s involvement with Boys. “I think he should have come to me with it, if I’m being honest with you.”

Simon was then asked if the forthcoming show has his blessing. “I wouldn’t say blessing,” he replied. “I just think they should come to me with these things.”

Interestingly, one of the executives who brought the project to NBC was Amanda Ghost, herself a musician hailing from the UK who released two albums and was once also head of Epic Records. Songs Ghost has co-written include James Blunt‘s “You’re Beautiful,” Beyonce and Shakira‘s “Beautiful Liar” and Scissor Sisters“Only The Horses.”
