Tori Amos returns today (September 9) with a piano ballad called “Flicker.” Inspired by upcoming Netflix documentary Audrie & Daisy, the singer/songwriter’s first new track in two years tackles the harrowing topic of sexual assault. While the subject matter is dark, Tori is focussed on empowerment. “Shed a little light on this, help me see,” she sings over tinkling keys, before declaring: “Heroines they are not born, they are made.” This is one of the ’90s icon’s better singles of the new millennium.

“‘Flicker’ was created after seeing the film Audrie & Daisy,” the 53-year-old says in a featurette about the song (below). “This was something that left me in shock and sadness. While the film really brings up for me as a mom that it is a very tough conversation that you have with your daughter, your son over the issue of sexual assault. Yet I believe this film is going to wake a lot of adults up.” The documentary hits theaters and Netflix on September 23. You can download the song here. A portion of the proceeds goes to RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network).
